LA TRANCHE-SUR-MER, La Baie d’Aunis

Vendee & Charente

Selected as this site occupies a unique position 100m from one of the best beaches in the southern Vendée and a short walk from the centre of La Tranche. The troughs of beautiful flowers in the reception area creates a welcoming atmosphere. It is a small intimate site with a good mixture of nationalities and no organised evening entertainment. Although well-shielded from the road, there may be some traffic noise. Access to the beach is via two gates operated with a magnetic key. There is a sea-water lagoon right next to beach where you can learn to windsurf.

Beware of the lovely photos on the Baie d'Aunis website, as they only show part of the picture! We booked for 3 nights on the strength of this together with the good reviews and spent the worst night we have ever had on a campsite. We were given a pitch close to the Reception where pitches are very small and with little or no shade. Tents in this area are so close together that cars have to be parked in front of the pitches, which means that walking along the paths is like walking between cars in a carpark. Our pitch had no shade at all and a blank wall backing onto the swimming pool, where there was a cleaning machine working all night long. The pitch was next to the exit barrier and close to the dustbins, so there was constant noise of people coming and going. Although the road running past the campsite does not look like a very large one, it is an access road and cars, lorries and motorbikes travel along this road all night long, To cap it all, the dustmen came to empty the dustbins, which were within 15 metres of our pitch, at 2 a.m.! No sleep was had at all that night and by 8 a.m. we were packed up and ready to leave. However I would say that the sanitary facilities were clean and perfectly satisfactory. We walked around the site and the older part of the site is as shown on the website : large pitches, plenty of shade, proper hedging between the pitches - but there is no differentiation in price between the best and the other area, which is barely better than a municipal car park.

Good campsite. We had a very enjoyable fortnight there. Lots of people we spoke to go back every year so it is popular. Great loaction - very close to beach, short walk into La Tranche. Beach pretty busy but easy cycling, even for a 5 year old, to other quieter beaches. Swimming pools are great. Two negatives for us: the pitch was too small, but there are many bigger; and the site is right by the main car park for the town so was very noisy as groups came back to collect their cars late at night.
