COLLIOURE, Les Criques de Porteils

Languedoc Roussillon

Selected as this Castels site benefits from a unique position between the Mediterranean sea and the foothills of the Pyrénées. There are stunning views from one side of the site over the creeks from which the site gets its name. Access to the pebbly beaches is down steps built into the rocks. On the other side a view of hills and vineyards gives the site a rural feel. You are also just a 30-minute walk from the delightful artists' town of Collioure, a great bonus as access by car in the high season can be difficult. This is a terraced site with a huge variety of pitch sizes. The ones that benefit from beautiful sunsets over the sea tend to be very small and are only suitable for tents and small motorhomes and caravans. A quiet atmosphere with a very attractive reception area. Excellent for coastal walks.

Deliberately went in September (to allow all under 16's, with the exception of the very young, to go back to school). Very impressed with most things - the area is delightful, the site is excellent. A couple of little things - the private beaches are superb though pebbly not sandy, so make sure you have footware. The coastal path walk into Collioure is nor recommended for the unfit - take the 2nd left out of the entrance instead. Parking / traffic in Collioure can be very difficult - especially on a Sunday (market day) even out of season: either walk or park at the top (Stade or by the military site) - watch out it's a steep walk back especially with shopping (in the heat of the day). The market is 'reasonable'. Shop - has basics (at normal higher than normal prices). Lots of local food shops in Colllioure - for 'main' shopping (beer etc) recommend big Carrefour at north side of Argeles (junction 10). Cleanliness standard is excellent throughout. Slight 'gripe' - bar / restaurant area in need of refreshing, especially a bar that is shut from 14:00 - 18:00, but I will concede that it is out of season. Didn't eat there - had a takeaway pizza on first night from restaurant, but it never felt 'inviting' - perhaps its location in the far corner of the site doesn't help - there isn't a passing trade to and from shop / reception / pool. Would definitely return.

This site is great mainly for some of it's views and the location. It is a huge site and your experience will very much depend on where you are placed. There are pitches with gorgeous sea views, others with views of hills, but some pitches have views of hedges or the people camping opposite them! It's a bit hit and miss really if you don't pre-book. We strolled around and found pitches that we thought were awful. Some areas are far too crowded for comfort. The shop is nice with great staff and the toilet areas are cleaned regularly. The shower rooms with sinks are great and the beaches are beautiful and private. The launderette is very good. We tried the restaurant but waited an hour to be served and the food wasn't nice. To walk to the beautiful town of Collioure took us only half an hour and it was worth it to shop, look at the sea, investigate cultural buildings and eat. This made our holiday enjoyable. If you book, stress that you would like a nice view! Also, don't rely on the wi-fi service in all areas of the site. The signal is strongest when by the toilet blocks! I wouldn't recommend the site for those with walking difficulties.

The view from the site over the bay and the fact that you can walk into Collioure straight from the site are its greatest assets. When we stayed the so-called restaurant was definitely not up to standard and the pitches with the best views are very small, only suitable for tents and very small camper vans. The best pitches are at the back of the site and they are also protected from the sea breeze.
